There’s nothing like a good sale when you have a few extra dollars.  You almost can’t wait to give your money away for whatever tangible item it might be.  Well, I must confess, I don’t like spending a lot of money.  I like the classic combo of a sale price coupled with an exclusive coupon.  So, one Saturday morning as I’m scrolling through emails I find this and jump right in the shower and prepare myself for the journey.  I mean seriously, how could I turn this sale away.  I love 1/2 off – not as much as 75%.  😉

The second-hand store has my heart. I’ve always had a love for old pieces.  As a child, we would visit the antique market in the Eastern Market weekly.  I didn’t get into buying clothes from the thrift store until I was an adult. It started in small boutique shops then I ventured into the larger chains. I’m hooked and I can admit it. Oakland County locations are the best and if you’re from around here you know what the OC means! So, I walked into the Value World location with no purse, comfortable shoes and nothing but time. Yup! I was prepared for the hunt through stale industrial detergent smelling items for little gems I could add to my wardrobe. (I’ll be sure to take you along for the next round in a few weeks to show you what it looks like.)

My methods are focused and success driven. I have an idea of what I need in my wardrobe and what sections may produce the unexpected steal. These are the areas I focus on when entering a large thrift store for fashion: work, trends, men’s.

The men’s department gave me a blue oxford shirt (I forgot to get a picture.) This is generally what I pick up from that section or a cardigan/sweater.  It’s the tomboy in me that keeps me in that section. I like oversized sweaters and men’s dress shirts for casual days and weekend attire.

My shopping didn’t end with those 7 pieces.  The journey continued as I sought out a few trending items. Kimonos, scarves, and sequins.  Only one of these were fruitful – scarves. I like to wrap my hair/head up from time to time.  Sometimes it makes an outfit grand.  I only wanted the ones with great pattern or silk.  Now, if a scarf embodied both of these characteristics, God bless us all. After searching each end cap’s selection of scarves, I walked outta there with 6.  Some restraint was displayed because at one time while in the store I had 14 in my cart. Then when I got home I realized one of these things was hiding a secret.  I’m not a label whore but I literally screamed when I saw it but it said Balenciaga.  SCOOOOOOORE!!!!

The only hang up I have with Value World is their lack of fitting rooms. I’ve been spoiled by Salvation Armies, Mother Fletcher’s (RIP), and Lost & Found. The majority of your goods are clothing items and the return policy is non-existent. So, why wouldn’t you want to have at least one small area dedicated to physically seeing if this garment works for you?  I mean, I literally had an in-store associate cover me while I got 50% naked to see if that black dress would fit nshit. Heaven help someone that doesn’t feel this motivated to make meaningful purchases in the second-hand store.  I don’t care if the thing is only $5. It’s my money and I don’t want to waste it.  Do better Value World!

These are the tags from my haul. Okay, not all of them but 80% is damn good. LOL! Now, add them all up and divide that by .50. I walked away from the register with 20 items for $45. BINGO! The time spent was well worth it. All of these items haven’t been placed into the rotation. Some are scheduled to go to the cleaners. The scarves, shorts, and tops have been washed in Tide/Downy Scentables being dried with a Bounce dryer sheet.  That’s all I really need – ensure they are clean.

Since I began shopping at these type of stores, my anticipation about the mall is ever present. I don’t like spending full price and appreciate the individuality of secondhand finds.  It almost guarantees I’ll be the only one with a specific garment on at a particular time and I relish in my individuality.

Are you a fan of the secondhand/thrift stores?

As we age, we have to grow for true maturity. Staying in the same head space and sometimes even the same place can hinder us.  Evolution is uncomfortable. You’ve become familiar with one set of norms and growth challenges you to be someone different.

I know it’s scary but with every day your life should become enriched with ideas and opportunities of growth. This in no way means you’ll have a new personality on a daily basis. If for some reason this happens, please seek professional assistance. At 30+, I don’t even think of things the same as I did at 30. I can truly say I’m growing, opening up to new experiences and looking for a every opportunity to smile. 🙂

The purpose of my life may not be clearly visible but I’m acknowledging I want to get there. I believe everyone on this earth wants to live in their purpose – but how will you know if you’re stuck in the same spot. In order to discover everything or even a portion of what it feels like to live in your purpose you have to break away from some norms. Embrace the uncomfortableness of the process and BE GREAT.

Have you noticed your evolution? Was it a welcomed change?

I very rarely let people get next to me.  There are several reasons for this and maybe one day I’ll expound on them.  My expectations are high when I consider a person to be my friend.  So, not having many friends works in and out of my favor to an extent and I believe in the idea of signs from above.  The side effects of this equate to destroying a relationship mentally very fast and within time abort connections making them non-existent to me.  Friendship is very important and I consider myself to be a good friend.  The combination of a sign and disappointment can be all too much for me.

The faults that I carry include being too trusting at different points of my life.  I never nurture friendships with the ulterior motive of changing someone.  When you’re happy, I’m happy with and for you.  However, when you’re happy don’t take this time to take a crap on me and that’s exactly how I felt. This most recent lesson showed me that no matter how much you genuinely support someone, they have the tools to cause unrecoverable pain.  1 Corinthians 4:5 says “Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.”  I feel my eyes opened to something I needed to see and left wondering “how many times has this been done this to me’ and my eyes were wide shut to the disrespect.  The discomfort I felt was palpable.  Me, being the stoic person I am – I didn’t want to show it. I had to deal with it from the inside and it became the hardest thing to do.  The question remained – Who equipped them to hurt me? The answer: I did, by allowing their choices and actions to simultaneously affect me through a fabled connection called “real friendship.”  These emotions that began to brew inside me may not have been their intention but I immediately needed to do the work to heal.  I’m smart enough to acknowledge the change and separate myself.  The individual is completely oblivious to the infraction and for a short while, I wondered if I acted irrationally.  In my stubborn nature, I said, nope.  It’s what needs to be done in the efforts to take care of myself.

Yes, we could talk it out but at this juncture, I don’t think that will heal the pain I’m nursing.  No, talking will only exhume something I’m working to remove from my memory.  Will I miss the relationship?  The simple answer is – yes, but I’m in defense mode.  To be truthful, how can you be friends with someone you feel you need to protect yourself from?  You can’t!  That’s too much work.  I’m taking ownership of the part I played in this happening.  There’s so much going on in my life right now that working to salvage this friendship would be a waste of time I genuinely need for God only knows.  It’s time for me to be selfish.

🙂

WiFi is essential wherever we go.  I mean EVERYWHERE!  If there is no connection, it must be important or I’ve decided to be off the grid for a little while.  Then I was watching one of my favorite YouTubers Alejandra when I noticed this little handy project.  As soon as I saw it, I wanted to share it with you and all the guest of my home.

This simple diy only requires 3 supplies and a large amount of trust.  You’ll need a picture frame, printed/collaged password information and scissors.

  • Cut the information to the designated size of the frame.
  • Place in frame.
  • Display appropriately in your home.

In the event you’re feeling petty or not so friendly, fold the frame down and carry on.  🙂

This is a very quick considerate project for your family and friends.  Let me know if you decide to post your passcode in your home.  If you’re not, meet me at the Starbucks nearest you.

I’m pretty organized.  Every morning I’m up early – running through the things I mentally noted that I needed to take care of.  Somehow, I manage to stop at least once a day to concentrate on what I was “suppose” to do.  On occasion, I remember whatever it is and other times it comes to me as I lay me head on the pillow.  I’m not proclaiming that I’m forgetful but I will acknowledge when change is needed.  I was determined to get my schedule in in check and become more productive.

I purchased a daily planner from target the beginning of the year.  Things were on track but I didn’t have enough space to write down what I needed.  So, I only used the monthly view pages, which allowed me to see when I was doing things.  I needed more!  A colleague (HA! – I said colleague) of mine had shown me her Day Designer Planner early this year and I never forgot it.  So I thought maybe this is something I need to invest in.  Needless to say, I kept going with my poor method and wasn’t maximizing my day.  In this new position, I realized that I had to get some order in my schedule.  I was on the hunt.  I liked the Day Designer but it wasn’t me.  I went to my homie, YouTube for answers.  Through a few comparison reviews and unboxings, I found the one for me in the eRiN Conderen brand.

Here it is!  Isn’t it lovely?  If you would like to hear the details of the order and features included, please follow me on Periscope @stoical127 for the live review.  Why I chose to go with this company?  I like the customization options because I don’t want to walk around with the same planner as everyone else. That’s just one of my quirks.  The colors were bright and changed throughout the year in the planner. There are motivation quotes, sufficient space to write and the little welcome pouch was a nice way to get you to try out other products.  So I ordered the planner after I finally decided how I was going to decorate my work space.  I decided on the Cynthia Rowley Floral office collection to breathe a little life into my cube of beige.

After some very stiff competition, I went with my favorite shade of blue in navy surrounded by flowers and we know how much I love flowers.  In an upcoming post I’ll show you how I decorated everything.  There are still things to hang on the wall.  You all know decorating takes time.  It’s never as easy as HGTV will have you to believe.  Is it wrong for me to want a chic chair or should I hold of until I get my library?  😉  I’ll be looking forward to your feedback in the comments.

Other reasons why I went with this I like the layout. It allows me to break my day up into 3 sections that are important to me and provide room for changes.  I’m not taking about morning, noon and night.  My days consists of fitness, work and evenings.  I’ll have some pictures after I set it up for you to have a peek into my daily life.  Another unconventional criterion was the CEO‘s energy.  She put a face to and voice to the products.  I felt she understood what some of us busy people feel. We want to take care of everything but feel there’s NEVER enough time in a day.  Some people wouldn’t have cared that she made those YouTube videos but it mattered to me.

I’m in love and have picked up quite a few tips on how I can make planning fun and personal for me.  The cover is my very own (check my IG: @bmisunderstood) picture and the cover can be switched out with another.  This is awesome for me because I like to change things up from time to time and like the idea that I never have to lose my cover because it’s time for a new planner.

I’ll keep you updated on how everything progresses through the year and if this method works for me as well.  🙂

I had a couple of posts last year about painting.  My painting days here were over.  This was under the assumption that I had completed this apartment to my liking and instructed my right-hand guy to dispose of the pigments.  In a moment during the spring cleaning, I discovered both colors under the sink.  In true Beau Miss style, I’m sure you know what happened next. 🙂
Within the next few weeks I scouted out areas in my temporary residence that needed a little life “off the wall.”  Of course I found the project I needed.  The dining room was screaming for a little attention. I had scored these white square frames from IKEA for $5 a piece.  They stored memories of one of my favorite events in Detroit, The Jazz Festival.  I generally pick up a poster at the fest to keep.  They turned out great after I cut them down to fit.  The dining room didn’t lack any visual interest.  All the walls are dedicated to my non judgmental best friend – music.  However, I had a grand vision for the space and some left over paint.  Take a look at what happened.

I truly love this look and was inspired to paint another area that was really perfectly fine.  The bathroom wasn’t bothering anyone but I had a half can of my favorite blue.  In the blink of an eye, I was on that wall with no abandon.  I like how it turned out but I have to build the decor up around it now!  (That totally wasn’t in the plan.)

Bathroom

These projects were completed during the Memorial Day weekend.  Following these projects I threw the cans into the trash never to return.  In a small space such as this that doesn’t offer me any outdoor space via my apartment, I’m always looking for ways that display my personality.  I grew up in a home where we always looked for things to do around the house.  It’s in my nature to personalize any space I live in.  During the next couple weeks some things will happen to make these urges more permanent.  The clock is ticking!
What changes if any did you make in your home with the change of the season?  Don’t fret my pet, I held on to the painter’s tape just in cast I’m inspired again. 😉

Couponing has been a part of me for couple of years.  If there are coupons, which equal additional savings, I want in on them.  In the year 2015, there is a need to spend less money and promote good spending habits for the kid.  This is the only reason I buy the newspaper – the coupons.  There are a million ways to save and I think I’m up to 997,000 – lol!!!

As I mentioned, I’m old school with the coupon clipping.  Every Sunday there is a stack of paper shavings and savings in my dining room.  Some of the stuff I’ve never used, want to try and use on a regular basis.  These are usually arranged by expiration date.  On occasion, I’ve been able to bundle the savings based on in store incentives for using coupons.  So sad, Meijer isn’t double couponing anymore.  That was where I use to get the best bang for my buck.  Needless to say, my book lives with me and I will not make a purchase unless I have looked through to see if there is any cost assistance available.  I’m not cheap, I just like the idea of getting it cheaper than the next customer.  There have been times when I have passed the savings on to others in the store because I didn’t need it.

Invitational coupons are another type of coupon I love more than clippings.  These offers come straight to ME – not my neighbor or son but me.  The best example of these would be Victoria’s Secrets monthly offers to save more on something I truly love and more than likely going to purchase.  It always helps when there is a free gift I can’t live without (ex. blanket, beach towel or tote).  This was a great assistant to me after, you remember what happened.  This increased my love and loyalty to the brand.  Every company needs loyal repeat customers.

App coupons are the freshmen on the team.  I’m sure we all have used them from time to time.  JoAnn’s, Michael’s and Macy’s are favorites via this line of offering.  The only part that kicks me, is when I haven’t charged my phone (which is always) and it’s on the verge of dying   If it dies before I meet the cashier, I’m out of luck like Chuck.  There is one location that trumps all in making me prepare my phone.  Can you guess who that retailer is?  One place – Target!  That Cartwheel has been a god send to my purse.  If you don’t have it, get it.  I’ve saved more than $30 in one visit using clipped, sale items and this app.  After clipping on Sundays, I usually open my Cartwheel and accept every offer I THINK I want.  Talk about a bundle on the savings.  I even scroll it while I’m in the store to check for anything I may have missed.  This one little application re-energized my couponing adventures.

My Cartwheel

Lastly, I may have been the last person to get a CVS card.  I just never wanted it because I couldn’t see the purpose of it when they scan something for you to get the savings anyway.  Moreover, I mastered how to get that free money.  ExtraCare Buck are a must.  This was a whole new world to me and I am loving it.  So far this year, I’ve accumulated $29.  You wouldn’t understand the joy I felt getting a few of my groceries while only spending $8 from my wallet.  Yes those baskets are small but mine was full.  I walked out with 6 bags of food and a brow pencil from NYX.IMG_8463

Saving money is the only way I’m going to fund some of my dreams.  There are times that I have to refuse the savings because I don’t need things or prioritize my cash.  My couponing isn’t extreme but it’s everything to me.

Do you use coupons?  Which are your favorite?
